On Monday, we launched the Injustice Boycott with a 43 day countdown until King Day of 2017.
On Tuesday, tens of thousands of us demanded that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio fire NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for his role in the murder of Eric Garner.
On Wednesday, we came together and demanded that San Francisco DA George Gascón fire and charge the officers who shot and killed Mario Woods.
Yesterday, we raised $320,919 for the Water Protectors of Standing Rock. I’m still blown away by your generosity.
DID YOU KNOW that only two states in the country automatically prosecute ALL youth as adults as soon as they turn 16 years old?
They can’t vote. They can’t buy tobacco products or alcohol. They can’t legally enter an adult club.
One state is North Carolina. That shouldn’t surprise us. Their repressive government is becoming known for stuff like this.
Guess what the other state is…. Mississippi? No. Florida? No. Arizona? No.
The other state is New York. New York and North Carolina are the only two states in the nation which automatically prosecutes all 16 year olds as adults.
Here in New York City, thousands and thousands of high school kids are sent to Rikers Island, often for non-violent petty offenses. The place is a hell hole that should be shut down, but study after study after study has proven that young people don’t belong there or in any adult prison.
Please allow me to introduce you to Raise The Age NY. They are helping to lead a public awareness campaign to have the legal age of adult prosecutions in New York raised from 16 to 18. This is such a reasonable reform. It’s why 48 states already have this. It’s why North Carolina is the only other state to have the age set at 16.
Today, your actions are simple, and will prepare you for where we are going in the days and weeks ahead, OK?
1. Write the following (or something like it with the #RaiseTheAge hashtag) on Twitter:
Only 2 states automatically prosecute 16 year olds as adults. One is North Carolina. The other? New York!
@NYGovCuomo should #RaiseTheAge
3. Read this important article from The Sentencing Project.
4. Find the following people and organizations on Facebook & Twitter and follow them now. They are each supporters and leaders of the Raise The Age Movement in New York. Follow their staff and leaders online. For a project this weekend, if someone would like to volunteer create a spreadsheet with all of the Facebook & Twitter handles for all of these organizations, email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org in the next few hours and I will send it back out to our team this weekend.
